Lake Arenal - Fishing tours
Lake Arenal is a 33-mile-long, man-made reservoir that plays a vital role in Costa Rica’s hydroelectric power generation. Managed by the national electric company, ICE, development is prohibited along its shoreline, preserving the area’s peaceful, natural character. At the western end of the lake, in the little village of San Luis de Tilaran stands a small marina, which serves as a popular launch point for boat tours, water taxis, and jet skiing and a Wake board school.
The lake was formed between 1972 and 1976 when a nearby valley was flooded, a process that required the relocation of the original town of Arenal to higher ground. This new settlement is now known as Nuevo Arenal. Lake Arenal is relatively shallow at its western end and reaches depths of up to 180 feet near the eastern side by the volcano. Seasonal changes in water levels cause islands to appear and disappear, making navigation more challenging during low water—though these conditions also offer the best fishing opportunities.
The surrounding hillsides have yielded Costa Rica’s oldest known pottery artifacts, dating back to 1500 BC. During periods of low water, it’s possible—if you’re very lucky—to spot fragments of hand-painted, hand-inscribed pottery along the shoreline. However, removing any artifacts from their original location is strictly prohibited.
Fishing tours on Lake Arenal often provide excellent wildlife viewing. Common sightings include howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, large iguanas, laughing falcons, ospreys, wild pigs, deer, and pizotes. On rare occasions, visitors may even glimpse the elusive tayra or the giant anteater.
All-Inclusive Tours
Lake Arenal is located in the north of Costa Rica, at the foot of the Arenal Volcano. It is approximately a three-hour drive from the capital, San José, and about one hour from Liberia International Airport.
The reservoir was created in 1970 and covers an area of 85 square kilometers, with a length of around 30 km. Its depth ranges from 30 to 60 meters. Lake Arenal is the largest lake in the country and an important source of hydroelectric power.
Lake Arenal & Its Natural Surroundings
Lake Arenal lies at the base of the majestic Arenal Volcano in northern Costa Rica. This man-made lake spans 85 square kilometers and reaches depths of 30 to 60 meters, depending on the season. As the largest lake in Costa Rica, it plays a vital role in the country’s hydroelectric energy production.
The lake is home to two main fish species: the Machaca and the famous Rainbow Bass, making it a prime destination for anglers. Over 100 additional mammal species depend on the lake’s water supply. While hiking around the lake, you may spot hundreds of bird species, tapirs, and—if you’re very lucky—even a jaguar (they do inhabit the area, though sightings are rare).
Paddling, windsurfing, and kayaking are extremely popular with both locals and visitors. Between November and April, strong and steady winds attract large numbers of windsurfers and kitesurfers to the lake.
