Finca „Pura Vida“ at Lake Arenal – Trial Living in Costa Rica
Test Life in Costa Rica: Vacation Apartment or Small Family Home with Pool
The dream of living in Costa Rica is enticing for many – but before you take the leap and permanently leave your life in Europe behind, trial living abroad is a wise option. Spend a few months in Costa Rica, also known as the "Switzerland of Central America," at the idyllic Lake Arenal. Explore the country, its people, and daily life without committing long-term right away.
Why Trial Living in Costa Rica Makes Sense
- Gain Realistic Impressions: Those who know Costa Rica only as a vacation destination are often enchanted by the beauty of the country and quickly consider moving there. However, the true life in Costa Rica goes far beyond vacation experiences. Trial living allows you to experience the country in its full spectrum – from bureaucracy and banks to medical services, shopping options, and cultural events. Only then will you truly understand which climate and region fit you best.
- Lower Risk: In just a few months, you can get to know Costa Rica without committing long-term. If it turns out not to be the right place for you, you can easily return to your old life.
- Improve Your Language Skills: A longer stay will improve your Spanish much more effectively than a short holiday. Immerse yourself in daily life and enhance your language skills through direct contact with locals.

- Culinary Discoveries: Try local specialties at traditional sodas (small restaurants) and discover fresh produce at local markets that you won’t find in Europe. At the same time, improve your Spanish.
- Enjoy Leisure Activities: Whether hiking, biking, or watersports – there’s something for everyone around Lake Arenal. The mild climate (20-30°C) ensures that outdoor activities are possible year-round.
- Experience Costa Rica: A country without a military, with 90% renewable energy, stunning nature reserves, and a unique biodiversity.
Legal and Financial Considerations
Even if you are only coming to Costa Rica on a trial basis, certain legal and financial aspects should be considered:
- Health Insurance: An international health insurance policy provides basic coverage, but many clinics in Costa Rica also offer emergency treatment for foreigners without residency permits.
- Tax Advice: Costa Rica is often referred to as a tax haven, but it is recommended to consult with a tax advisor or lawyer if you have any doubts.
- Registration Requirement: For Europeans, there is no registration requirement in Costa Rica during the first 6 months. However, if your stay exceeds 6 months, your foreign driver’s license will become invalid. At that point, it is advisable to register with the immigration office. A quick day trip to Nicaragua will extend your driver’s license validity for another 6 months.
